公司的前身为兵器工业部军工企业，1966年建厂，生产轻武器，番号九八○七厂（又名国营云南机器五厂）。1980年军转民开始生产汽车；1983年更名为云南蓝箭汽车制造厂；1997年由一汽集团、红塔集团联合，在云南蓝箭汽车制造厂的基础上组建成立一汽红塔云南汽车制造有限公司； 2009年8月一汽红塔公司全面进入一汽通用公司合资体系，成为其控股子公司，更名为一汽通用红塔云南汽车制造有限公司。

Our company used to be a local military factory belong to weapons industry department, built in 1966, mainly produced the light weapons of 60 and 82 model trench mortars, it was named 9807 factory or The National Yunnan Machines 5th Factory, it was transferred to manufacture vehicles in 1980 and was renamed to Yunnan Lanjian Automobile factory in 1983, in 1997, combined with FAW and HONGTA Group and on the base of the Yunnan Lanjian Automobile factory ,founded the FAW-HONGTA Yunnan Automobile Co. Ltd., In August, 2009, FAW-HONGTA Company became to one of subsidiary companies of FAW-GM Company and was renamed to FAW-GM Hongta Yunnan Automobile Manufacturing Co. Ltd.

Product development has achieved computer aided design and network-based management, UG NX4 and CATIA are used by three-dimension design, CMM coming from Delimitek-USA Company in America was utilized, product three-dimension data design was conducted by reverse engineering. As for CAE, UG NX4 mechanical motion analysis software and I-DEAS software of finite element analysis, Dawei CNC machining centre in Japan are utilized, dies and fixture fully use computer aided design which has data shared with product design.
